I know I’ve said this before, but seriously, this year has just flown by and I cannot believe that April is already over. Well, almost over. There are a few more days to go, but still, May is on its way and there’s nothing stopping it.
I really got back into my reading groove in April. I actually read the most books in a single month in April than I have this entire year so far. I read a total of seven books this month, ranging from romance to graphic novels to non-fiction to poetry. I really covered the whole gamut when it comes to my personal reading habits in April, and I’m pretty darn happy about it.
I’m actually quite pleased to be getting back into a regular reading groove after what has felt like a stressful first quarter of the year, which, in all honesty, it really was. I know that, but sometimes that little bit of myself pops in and says, “you could’ve done a lot better, and a lot more, and you’re totally failing in life”. I try not to let that bit of myself get to me too often, but it’s always constant to some degree.
May, however, is almost here and I feel like I can breath easier and have some more freedom to move around. The sun is shining, warmer weather is on the horizon, the snow is almost all gone (THANK ALL THE DEITIES AND ANCESTORS FOR THAT), and I’m done with school until September rolls around.
I had totally forgotten what that feeling of joy and freedom that summer brings, but I’m starting to feel it again.
That being said, let’s get to the books that I did read in the month of April:

- Admission Requirements – Pheobe Wang
- Advanced Physical Chemistry – Susannah Nix
Out of all the entire books that I read this month, I have two standout favourites that I want to talk about.
The first of those two books is Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance, and Revolution in Trump’s America that was edited by Samhita Mukhopadhyay and Kate Harding. I had had this book on my holds list from my local library for months and it finally came through for me and I couldn’t be more ecstatic to read it.
This non-fiction essay collection features 23 essays written by a really diverse group of women about their thoughts and feelings and experiences after the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections, and how they planned on moving forward in the upcoming four years.
I was really pleasantly surprised by the diversity and the inclusivity of the female authors included in this collection. This is a feminist book, there’s no doubt about that, but it is an intersectional feminist book, which makes it even that much better and that much more important of a read. You get to read about so many different female perspectives on what the election of Donald Trump meant, not only to women in the U.S. but around the world. The essays in the collection are articulate, smart, and succinct. The 23 essays don’t beat around the bush, they get right to the point, and they are fiercely powerful and enlightening.
I’m going to wager a guess that Nasty Women will probably end up on my top 10 favourite books of 2018.
The second standout book that I read in April is one that I just finished, and that book is Advanced Physical Chemistry by Susannah Nix. It’s the third book in Susannah’s Chemistry Lessons series and it was just a real delight to read. I loved it.
The novel centres on the characters of Penny and Caleb. Penny has sworn off men after finding out that her latest boyfriend is not only a total tool but also a cheater, that is until her hottie barista (that she’s been secretly crushing on for months) at her favourite coffee shop is totally into her. These two decide to test out how compatible their physical chemistry is with one another and sparks fly!
I loved reading this book. I got that warm, fuzzy feeling that you get when you read a good romance novel. I laughed while reading this book, my angsty heart got that needed bit of love, and a romance novel can never go wrong when there is coffee involved in my opinion.
[Side note: be forewarned that you may experience a craving for lavender-flavoured lattes after reading this novel. I totally did and am currently on the lookout for a coffee shop that sells them.]
I just loved reading Advanced Physical Chemistry. I definitely recommend you check out the Chemistry Lessons series if you’re looking for a great romance novel series.
