March is officially over and done with and spring has officially arrived. I surprisingly did a lot of reading this month, which both surprises me and tells me how badly I needed an escape in March because almost every single one of the books I read were romances. March could also be renamed “the month of Nalini Singh” since I pretty much devoured all of Nalini’s contemporary novels.
This is going to be a very short and sweet post, so let’s get to the favourite books I read this month.
First off, I finally finished reading The Demon Crown by James Rollins. I started reading this book while on summer vacation last year, and with everything that cascaded out at the end of 2018, I never got the chance to finish it. I’ve been reading Rollins’ Sigma series for almost a decade now and I still can’t believe the research and work that he puts into these novels. A mix of history, action, adventure, and science, this series, and this book, in particular, offer a really fun and immersive read that transports you across the globe. Rollins’ has crafted characters within this series that I’ve loved reading and watching them grow and become these very memorable personalities, and this book really brought those characters and their relationships with one another to a whole other level. These books have always been part of my summer reads and I can’t wait to dive into the newest novel in the series. Also, this book heightened my fear of critters to a whole other level.
While I enjoyed reading all of Nalini Singh’s Rock Kiss and Hard Play series my two favourites of both series have to be Rock Wedding and Rebel Hard. Both of these novels just spoke to me in so many ways. I am a sucker for really well-crafted “second chance” romance novels and Rock Wedding just hit all the buttons I loved about the trope. Not only was it really well-written in terms of the two main characters and the narrative, but it also had a healthy dose of angst and sizzle that just helped this story leap off the page for me. (If you didn’t know this already, I’m a huge fan of angst, whether it be in the books I read or the TV shows I watch. It’s probably why I love angst in romance, and, well, the whole genre of romance in general because I know that at the end, these two characters will get their happily ever after.)
Rebel Hard really spoke to me, specifically the character of Nanya. I completely understood her motives, her drive, her desires, and her love for her family. I think it’s why I related to the book so much and why I love it just as much. Being the child of immigrants and trying to find your place in the world while still connecting with your family and your culture and heritage is hard, it’s always going to be difficult, and sometimes treacherous, but it’s what we do and it’s what Nanya and Raj did throughout this book while forming this incredible relationship with one another. I loved it!
